“Social networking sites like Facebook could be monitored by the UK government under proposals to make them keep details of users’ contacts.
The Home Office said it was needed to tackle crime gangs and terrorists who might use the sites, but said it would not keep the content of conversations.
It is part of a plan to store details of all phone calls, e-mails and websites visited on a central database.”

Of course all terrorists and organised criminals will Proxy Firefox through a SSH tunnel using a remote server in a country which won’t record all their internet activity. Leaving the UK government with a database of Facebook statuses such as,”If 1m people join my group, girlfriend will let me turn our house into a pirate ship”.

Security expert Richard Clayton told zdnet,”"To deploy deep packet inspection equipment isn’t cheap — the word ‘billion’ is appropriate,” said Clayton. “It took the Home Office the best part of a year to find £3m for the Police e-Crime Unit. That’s what is wrong with this picture.”

So maybe it’s time to join the group,”Stop the government monitoring our social networking sites!
